I Do Not Fear the Dark

I do not fear the dark
I fear the darkness
That has begun to swallow
All I’ve come to know
As I fear not the fall
But fear the falling
Losing grasp of all I knew
And nothing left to hold on to

I do not mind so much the losing
Of the measured time remaining
Time still left to me
As the losing of my mind
And all the years I’ve had
Now left behind
No memory
Of gains and losses, victories, defeats
Of others’ lives and loves and deaths
Of my own loves and sorrows
Of all encompassed in identity
Defining me

When I was young and strong
My stride was bold
I held no fears in striking out
Into new worlds unknown
But now my faculties are failing me
I am grown old
And fears I never knew
Turn inward now, as I begin
Forgetting everyone and everything
Once held within
And slowly all
Recedes beyond recall
As I grow small
In what was learned
And histories once known
And looking round for evidence
In vain of my existence
I find none, like one
Who standing under noon-day sun
No longer casts a shadow on the wall

I actually wept in some parts of your film about dementia. My Grandpa had it and it was one of the worst things I have ever had to deal with. I'm actually thinking of becoming a support worker and your films are helping me realize it. I love your work and your attidtude. I've seen everything you've done and although I'm trying to be a support worker, my main passion is digital video editing, particularly documentary film. You are an inspiration to me man.
Much love from Way-yals.

Mike

P.S. Thanks Louis.

What a well made documentary, I was aprehensive at first as I didn't know what direction you would take as it can be a very difficult subject wrought with emotion. My Nan suffers from dementia and is in the later stages of severity, it's not been easy but I think you have done well to show a different light as opposed to the grim media view we so often see.

Nancy seems like such a dear woman and her husband a truly commited man.

This documentary is definitely one of my favourites from Louis.

It had me close to tears. It seemed like the people in this documentary were doing the very best they could do considering the circumstances. I was touched by Nancy and John the most. I think their generation is incredibly tough and it was remarkable that John was able to look after Nancy despite being quite old himself.

Great work BBC, Louis, and Crew

It would really be an extreme love then. Dementia is the progressive deterioration in cognitive function - the ability to process thought or intelligence. Millions of elderly people are still driving and some of them have some kind of dementia, such as Alzheimer's. How to proceed about individuals driving with dementia is still a subject of some discussion.
